Variety Plus Part One

foxygen-cassette

This weeks Twisted Groove is a varied sort. I had a bunch of new musical acquisitions I wanted to play. Some of the music is very new and others are not. I had seen the movie Beware of Mr. Baker the night before. It was a great story so I had to start the evening off with some Ginger Baker. The show starts there and continues to evolve.

GlassWorks Part One

Beck Glass

This weeks Twisted Groove was spawned by the new Philip Glass Rework_ record. The record of reworkings was curated by Beck who was asked by Philip Glass to assemble interpreters of his music for the record. Beck collected a great roster of artist including Beck himself, Tyondai Braxton, Amon Tobin, Cornelius, Dan Deacon, Johann Johannsson, Nosaj Thing, Memory Tapes, Silver Alert, Pantha Du Prince, My Great Ghost and Peter Broderick. The idea was for the new artist influenced by Glass to reinvent his music. Glass was quoted in the New York Times “I’m interested in what happens to music when other people use it. Whereas there are composers who don’t like anyone to touch their music, I think people should because they do things I can’t think of. I’m the opposite of being possessive about a piece.” Glass’s music is very influential in the world of electronic music and I believe for the most part this record works quit well.

“Basically, Glass did with live musicians what a lot of techno and electronic-music producers ended up doing with sequencers, samplers, and other mechanical ways of ordering sound.” Pitchfork Media…

Help Me Somebody Part 1

This weeks Twisted Groove is an interesting show of No Wave, New Wave, Underground Music from New York and Afro Funk,. Much of the music being African drum rooted with funky bass lines. I start the show off with outtake tracks from David Byrne and Brian Eno’s album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and go right into Talking Heads Remain In Light Album, choosing the outtake track Fela’s Riff from that album. A bit later I get into a Arthur Russel track which is Underground Dance music and contains a lot of Afro type percussion with a persistent bass kick. The Fela thread moves through the whole show but not in the most overt way. If you give it a listen I am sure you’ll agree and agree that it is a super fun show!!
